6.4 — Crowd Crush

The most misunderstood hazard in this volume, and understanding the mechanism is what saves people.

What actually happens

The word "stampede" is wrong and it does real harm, because it suggests people running and trampling.

That is not what kills.

What kills is compressive asphyxia.

**Density rises to the point where people cannot expand their chests to breathe. They remain upright, held there by the pressure of bodies, and they suffocate standing up.

And the crowd is not panicking. In most crush events, people are calm, sometimes for several minutes, until they lose consciousness.

**Which is why "do not panic" is useless advice here, and why the mechanism matters: you are not trying to avoid being trampled. You are trying to avoid being in a place where the density gets high enough.

The density thresholds

Approximate, and the shape is what matters.

Up to about four people per square metre: you can move freely.

Around five: movement becomes difficult, you are in contact with others, and you no longer choose your direction.

**Six or more: dangerous. You are being moved by the crowd, you cannot raise your arms easily, and breathing becomes restricted.

And beyond that: waves of pressure travel through the crowd like ripples, and people cannot resist them or stay upright when they hit.

The critical transition is around the point where you stop moving yourself and start being moved.

The warning signs

And these are the whole of the practical content, because the response after that transition is limited.

You are being touched on all sides continuously.

You cannot move in the direction you choose.

You cannot easily raise your arms to your chest.

You feel waves or surges passing through the crowd — this is the strongest single warning and it means the density is already dangerous.

You hear people calling out, or a noise level that suddenly changes.

And the environmental ones, which you can spot before entering: a bottleneck, a narrowing, a single exit, a downhill slope, a barrier, a staircase, or a turnstile with a crowd behind it.

Any of these: get out to the side, now, while you still can.

What to do

Before the density rises

The whole of the reliable advice.

When you arrive anywhere crowded, find the exits. All of them, not just the one you came in by.

Stay near the edges. The centre of a crowd is where density peaks and from which escape is hardest.

Avoid bottlenecks. Do not stand near a narrowing, a barrier or the bottom of a slope.

And leave early. **Before the end of the event, before the rush. This single habit removes most of the risk of most crowd events.

As density rises

Move diagonally and gradually towards the edge. Not straight across the flow, and not against it — move with the crowd while drifting sideways, using the moments when pressure eases.

Do not push directly against the flow. It does not work and it adds to the pressure.

Stay upright, and stay on your feet.

And keep your arms up in front of your chest, elbows out, hands together — a boxer's guard. **This preserves a space for your chest to expand, which is the mechanism that kills. It is the single most useful physical action.

Conserve breath. Do not shout.

Take advantage of the surges. **Pressure comes in waves, and the gaps between them are when you can move. Move sideways during the ease, hold during the surge.

If you fall

The most dangerous situation and it is not necessarily fatal.

Get up immediately if there is any chance.

If you cannot: get onto your side, curl up, and protect your head with your arms. Lying on your side allows the chest to expand, and lying face down or on your back does not.

And keep the arms in front of the face to preserve an air space.

If somebody near you falls

Try to make space and help them up if you can do it without falling yourself.

And shout to the people around you to step back — in the events where a fall has not cascaded, it has usually been because people immediately nearby created a gap.

What organisers should have

Because a great many crush events are failures of design, not of crowd behaviour.

Multiple wide exits, with capacity for the whole crowd.

No bottlenecks between the crowd and the exits.

Controlled entry so that density cannot exceed safe levels.

Monitoring, with the ability to stop entry.

And a way to communicate with the crowd.

Which is worth knowing as a participant, because it tells you what to look at when you arrive: if there is one exit and no visible control on entry, that is information.

Where these happen

So that you recognise the setting.

Religious gatherings and pilgrimages.

Concerts and stadiums, particularly at entry and exit.

Festivals with narrow streets.

Railway stations and platforms.

Sales, distributions and giveaways.

And anywhere a large crowd meets a narrow opening.

In India specifically, several of the worst incidents have occurred at religious gatherings and at railway stations, and the common factor has been a bottleneck and an uncontrolled surge.

The one to remember

The transition point.

As long as you can move in the direction you choose, you are fine.

The moment you are being moved rather than moving, the situation has changed category — and that is the moment to get to the edge, not later.

Almost everybody who has survived a crush describes recognising that transition and either acting on it or not.

What to do with this page

It is compressive asphyxia, not trampling. People suffocate standing up, calmly.

Find all the exits when you arrive, stay near the edges, and leave early.

Waves of pressure passing through a crowd means the density is already dangerous.

Arms up in a guard in front of your chest. It preserves the space that keeps you breathing.
