8.1 — Nuclear, Chemical and Biological, Soberly
These are the hazards people are most frightened of and least likely to meet, and the fear is largely made of not knowing what is actually true.
So: what is actually true, and what you would actually do.
Radiation, without the mythology
Three facts that reframe everything.
Radiation is not contagious. **A person exposed to radiation does not emit it. They may carry radioactive dust on their clothing and skin, which is removed by taking the clothing off and washing — and after that they are not a hazard to you.
Removing outer clothing removes a very large proportion of contamination — commonly cited as around ninety per cent — and showering removes most of the rest.
And the three protections are simple: time, distance, shielding. Less time near it, more distance from it, and more mass between you and it.
If there is a nuclear detonation or a serious release
The one rule
Get inside, stay inside, stay tuned.
Fallout — the radioactive dust that settles after a detonation — is the main hazard for most people, and it decays fast.
And that decay is the key fact, because it makes sheltering a winning strategy: radiation levels fall steeply in the first hours and days. **A rough rule used in civil defence is the seven-ten rule: for every sevenfold increase in time, radiation drops to about a tenth. Which means the first hours are by far the most dangerous and it improves rapidly.
So the instinct to run is wrong. Sheltering for 24 to 48 hours is dramatically safer than travelling through fallout.
Where to shelter
The centre of a substantial building.
**A basement is best. Failing that, an interior room on a middle floor of a large building, away from the roof and away from the exterior walls.
Mass is what protects: concrete, brick, earth, water, books. The more of it between you and the outside, the better.
Avoid the top floor — fallout accumulates on the roof — and the ground floor of a small building.
What to do
Close windows, doors and vents. Turn off air conditioning.
Remove outer clothing before entering the shelter area, bag it, and leave it outside the room.
Wash exposed skin and hair with soap and water. Do not use conditioner on hair — it binds particles to the hair.
Stay for at least 24 hours, and preferably 48, unless told otherwise.
Use stored food and water. Sealed containers and anything indoors is fine — fallout is dust and it does not penetrate packaging.
And listen to official information on a battery radio.
On iodine tablets
Frequently misunderstood.
Potassium iodide protects one organ — the thyroid — against one isotope, radioactive iodine, by saturating the thyroid with stable iodine first.
It does nothing against any other radiation or any other isotope.
It should only be taken when instructed by authorities, because it has side effects and because timing matters — it works best shortly before or immediately after exposure.
It is not a general anti-radiation medicine.
Chemical release
Recognising it
**Unusual smell, vapour or mist. Multiple people unwell at once with the same symptoms — the same pattern as carbon monoxide (6.2). **Dead birds or animals. **Eye, throat and skin irritation. Difficulty breathing.
What to do
Move.
Uphill, upwind, and away. Most chemical agents are heavier than air and pool in low ground.
This is the opposite of the radiation rule and it is worth holding both: for a chemical release, get out and get upwind; for radiation, get inside and stay.
If you cannot get out: get inside, get high, seal the room. **Windows, doors, vents, and wet towels at gaps. Turn off ventilation.
Remove contaminated clothing — cut it off rather than pulling it over your head — and wash with soap and water.
Do not induce vomiting.
And get medical help even if you feel better.
Biological
Realistically, this means an outbreak rather than an attack, and 8.2 covers pandemics.
The core measures are the same for both.
Distance from infected people.
Hand hygiene, which is unglamorous and highly effective.
A well-fitted respirator for airborne agents — a fitted particulate mask, not a loose cloth one.
Avoiding crowded indoor spaces.
And accurate information from a health authority.
And the reassuring note: biological attacks are extremely rare and technically difficult, and the vast majority of biological risk to any individual is ordinary infectious disease.
Keeping this proportionate
Because the fear is disproportionate to the risk and it is worth saying so plainly.
Your lifetime probability of being affected by a nuclear or chemical event is very low.
Your probability of a house fire, a road accident, a serious illness or a job loss is orders of magnitude higher.
Which means: if you have not done 1.4's afternoon of ordinary preparation, doing it is worth far more than anything specific to this chapter.
And the preparations for this chapter are almost entirely the same as the ordinary ones — water, food, a radio, a sealed room, a plan. There is no special equipment that matters much.
The one thing worth knowing
Because it is genuinely counter-intuitive and it is the highest-value fact here.
In a radiological event, going outside to travel is more dangerous than staying inside, for the first day or two.
Almost everybody's instinct is to leave, and leaving during peak fallout is the thing that causes preventable exposure.
Get inside. Stay inside. Stay tuned.
