7.2 — Water, Shelter, Warmth
The order in the title is wrong on purpose, because it is the order people assume.
The correct order is warmth, then water, then food — and the reason is 1.2's rule of threes: three hours without shelter in hostile conditions, three days without water, three weeks without food.
People search for water and food while dying of exposure.
Warmth and shelter
Why it is first
Hypothermia does not require snow (3.6, 5.10).
Wet and windy at ten to fifteen degrees is sufficient, and that describes a great many places where people get lost.
And the three heat thieves, in order of how much they take:
Wet. **Water conducts heat away roughly twenty-five times faster than air. Wet clothing is the single most dangerous condition.
Wind. Strips the warm layer of air next to you continuously.
And the ground. Conduction into cold earth takes heat far faster than air does, and people sleeping directly on the ground lose enormous amounts of heat without realising.
Which gives the three priorities: get dry, get out of the wind, get off the ground.
The order of construction
Off the ground first. **Before anything else. **A thick layer of dry leaves, grass, pine needles, branches, bark or cardboard between you and the earth. **Thicker than you think — it compresses. This is the highest-value action in this chapter.
Then a windbreak. A rock face, a fallen log, dense vegetation, a bank.
Then a roof, if you have time and material.
And then insulation over you — more leaves, more grass, anything that traps air.
Shelter types
Use what is there rather than building from nothing.
Natural shelter. **An overhang, a hollow, dense evergreen branches, the lee of a large rock, a fallen tree. Fastest and usually best.
Debris shelter. A ridge pole against a stump or a fork, branches leaned against it, then piled leaves and debris thick over the top — half a metre or more. This is the standard woodland shelter and it works well.
And small is warm. **A shelter should be barely big enough to lie in. Large shelters cannot be heated by a body.
Emergency blanket. Reflective side towards you, and use it to block wind and reflect heat rather than wrapping tightly — condensation makes you wet.
Keeping warm without fire
**Move a little, periodically. Not enough to sweat — sweat is wet, and wet is the enemy.
Eat if you have food. Digestion generates heat.
Cover the head and hands.
Curl up to reduce surface area.
And share body heat if you are with somebody.
Water
How much and when
Roughly three litres a day in ordinary conditions, more in heat.
And the guidance from search and rescue: drink when thirsty rather than rationing to the point of dehydration. A dehydrated person makes worse decisions about finding water, and impaired judgement is the greater risk (1.2).
Finding it
In rough order of reliability.
Follow terrain downhill. **Water collects in valleys and drainages. Walk downhill and you will usually find a watercourse.
Look for green vegetation in an otherwise dry landscape — it marks water at or near the surface.
Watch animals and birds. **Trails converge on water. **Birds circle it at dawn and dusk. Insect activity increases near it.
Dig in a dry riverbed, on the outside of a bend, where water sits below the surface.
Collect rain, on any clean surface, including a sheet of plastic or a tarpaulin.
Collect dew, by dragging a cloth through grass at dawn and wringing it out. Slow and it works.
And in snow: melt it, do not eat it. **Eating snow costs body heat you cannot afford. Melt it against your body inside a container, or over a fire.
Making it safe
From 5.11.
Boiling for one minute is the most reliable method and needs only heat.
Filter through cloth first to remove sediment, which makes everything else work better.
Chemical tablets, if you have them, according to the instructions.
And the honest calculation: if you have no means of treatment and you are seriously dehydrated, drinking untreated water from a flowing source is usually the better risk. Waterborne illness takes days to appear and dehydration kills faster — this is the standard judgement and it should be made knowingly rather than by default.
Prefer flowing water over standing, upstream of habitation, and clear over cloudy.
Never
Seawater. Urine. Alcohol. All three accelerate dehydration (5.11).
Food
Last, and mostly irrelevant.
**You have weeks. In almost every lost-person scenario, food does not matter.
And the specific warning: do not eat unfamiliar plants, mushrooms or berries.
The risk-reward is terrible. You gain almost nothing nutritionally and you can be seriously poisoned, and poisoning while lost is catastrophic — vomiting and diarrhoea accelerate dehydration, which is the thing that actually threatens you.
Mushrooms in particular: never. Several lethal species closely resemble edible ones and the toxins are not destroyed by cooking.
What is generally safe if you know it: water from a flowing source, and food you brought.
And if you genuinely must forage, insects are more reliably safe than plants in most environments — which nobody wants to hear and is true.
Fire
Covered properly in 7.3 because its main value is signalling, and its warmth is a bonus.
Two notes here.
Fire is a morale multiplier, consistently reported in survival accounts as disproportionately important to keeping going.
And it consumes enormous amounts of time and energy in wet conditions. Do not spend the last hours of daylight failing to light a fire when you could have built a shelter.
Shelter first, fire second.
The order, once more
Because it is the chapter.
Off the ground. Out of the wind. Dry.
Then water.
Then signal (7.3).
Then, a long way behind, food.
What to do with this page
Insulate from the ground before anything else. It is the highest-value action and almost nobody does it first.
Wet is the enemy. Getting dry beats getting warm.
Small shelters are warm shelters.
Drink when thirsty rather than rationing into confusion.
Melt snow, never eat it.
And do not forage. You have weeks without food and hours without shelter, and poisoning is a catastrophe.
