8.4 — The Zombie Apocalypse, as a Systems Exercise
Clearly labelled: this is fiction.
**Zombies do not exist and will not exist. There is no pathogen that reanimates dead tissue, because death is the cessation of the metabolic processes that would be required to move.
So why is it here?
Because it is the best available teaching device for a specific and genuinely useful set of skills: logistics, resource arithmetic, risk assessment under uncertainty, and thinking about a slow collapse rather than a sudden one.
Public health agencies have used it deliberately for exactly this reason — a zombie preparedness campaign gets people to build the same kit they would need for a hurricane, and people engage with it who would ignore a leaflet about emergency planning.
So: the exercise, played straight, with the real lesson named at each step.
Round one: the first week
The scenario as usually imagined: a rapidly spreading condition, breakdown of services, people advised to stay home.
And immediately, the questions that matter are not about zombies.
How much water do you have? **Three days at three litres a person. Do the arithmetic for your household now — the answer is usually one day.
How much food, and how much of it needs cooking?
How much medication? The single most commonly fatal shortage in any real prolonged emergency, and the one nobody counts.
How will you know what is happening? If the network is down and your phone is dead in eleven hours.
Can you defend or secure your home? Which in real terms means: can you lock it, is it visible, do you know your neighbours.
And who is in your group? Every real disaster is survived in groups and every fictional one is imagined alone.
Real lesson: you have less than you think, you have not counted, and the shortages will be medication, water and information rather than food.
Round two: the arithmetic
This is the part that makes the exercise worth doing.
Work out, in numbers, how long your household lasts.
**Water: litres available ÷ (3 × people). Usually one to two days.
**Food: calories available ÷ (2,000 × people). Usually one to three weeks if you count everything in the cupboard honestly, which is more than people expect.
**Medication: days of supply. Usually under a month, frequently under a week.
Power: hours of light and phone charge.
And then the second calculation, which is the one nobody does: how far can you travel, on foot, carrying what?
Water weighs a kilogram a litre. **Three days of water for one person weighs nine kilograms. Which means you cannot carry more than about three days of water, and that fact alone determines every movement decision in any real evacuation.
Real lesson: logistics is arithmetic, weight is the constraint, and water is the binding one.
Round three: stay or move
The central decision in every collapse scenario, fictional and real.
Staying: you know the building, you have your supplies, you have neighbours, and you are findable by anybody organising a response.
Moving: you burn supplies while travelling, you are exposed, you carry only what you can lift, and you arrive somewhere with no local knowledge and no standing.
And the real-world answer, which is the same as 7.1's: stay, unless the specific place has become untenable.
People in real disasters who moved without a destination did worse than people who stayed.
Real lesson: movement is expensive and should be to somewhere specific, for a specific reason, with a specific route.
Round four: the group
**The genre imagines the lone survivor. Every real case is a group.
And the questions the fiction actually gets right:
How many people can your supplies support, and for how long?
**Who decides? A group with no decision process argues at the worst moment.
What are the rules, agreed in advance, about sharing, about admitting new people, about work?
Who does what? The Andes survivors organised into functional teams within days (1.5), and it is the single most cited factor in their survival.
And what happens when somebody is ill, injured or not contributing?
Real lesson: groups need an agreed decision process and a division of labour, established before the crisis, and the absence of one is what fractures them.
Round five: what actually kills people
In every fictional collapse, the danger is the monster.
In every real one, it is:
Untreated injuries and infections. A cut that becomes infected with no antibiotics is a serious problem.
Waterborne disease from failed sanitation.
Temperature — heat or cold.
Chronic conditions without medication.
Accidents, particularly from unfamiliar physical work.
And violence, which is real and is a much smaller factor than fiction suggests (1.4).
**Real lesson: prepare for infection, sanitation, temperature and medication. The dramatic threat is not the one that gets you.
Round six: rebuilding
The part fiction almost never covers and which is the actual content of every real recovery.
Water treatment. Sanitation. Food production. Medicine. Communication. And an agreement about how decisions get made.
Which is a decent working definition of civilisation, and it is worth noticing that it took a long time to build and that most of it is unglamorous.
Real lesson: the useful skills are not combat. They are first aid, water treatment, growing food, fixing things, and getting people to agree.
What the exercise actually trains
Six things, and every one transfers.
Counting your resources honestly, in numbers, rather than assuming.
Understanding weight as the constraint on movement.
Thinking about coupled failures (8.3) — power takes water takes communication takes payment.
Making the stay-or-move decision on evidence rather than instinct.
Group decision-making agreed in advance.
And identifying what actually causes harm rather than what is most vivid.
Which is the entire content of the real chapters in this volume, arrived at by a route people will actually engage with.
The honest framing
If you have done the exercise and are now thinking about supplies, do the ordinary version instead.
**1.4's afternoon. **5.12's kit and plan. 9.2's list.
The kit for a zombie apocalypse and the kit for a cyclone, a power cut, a pandemic and an earthquake are the same kit.
Which is the actual point, and it is why public health agencies used the device: everybody who prepared for the fictional scenario was prepared for all the real ones.
What to do with this page
Do the arithmetic tonight. **Litres, calories, days of medication, hours of light. You will be surprised, downward.
Water weighs a kilogram a litre, which caps how far you can move and is the single most useful number in the exercise.
Stay unless the place is untenable.
Agree the group's decision process before you need it.
And the threat that gets you is infection, sanitation and temperature — not the dramatic one.
