1.2 — The History, in One Chapter

In a small room in Leipzig in 1879, a physiologist named Wilhelm Wundt set up a brass instrument that dropped a ball onto a platform and started a clock. A trained observer sat waiting. When he heard the ball land, he pressed a key. The clock stopped. Wundt then asked him to do it again, but this time to concentrate on the sound rather than on his own hand.

The two times differed by about a tenth of a second, reliably.

Nothing about that seems dramatic. It was, though, the first time anyone had taken something purely mental — where your attention happens to be pointing — and produced a number for it in a laboratory. Wundt's room is usually given as the birthplace of psychology as a science, and the number is why. Everything before it was philosophy, and philosophy has no clock.

This chapter is the story from there to now. It is worth knowing because every school in it left something behind that you still use, and because the failures are as instructive as the successes.

Before the laboratory

Two thousand years of thinking about the mind produced questions rather than answers, but the questions were good ones and they have not gone away.

The Greeks asked whether the mind is the body. Plato said no, the soul is separate and survives. Aristotle said the mind is what the body does, the way cutting is what a knife does — an answer astonishingly close to the modern one.

Indian philosophy got there earlier and went further in one direction. The Buddhist analysis of mind, written down from roughly the third century BCE onwards, breaks experience into moment-by-moment components, distinguishes the raw sensation from the reaction to it, and describes in detail how craving and aversion produce suffering. Part 5 of this volume uses one of its images — the second arrow — as a working tool, and Part 7 uses its attention practices, because on those specific subjects the tradition had two thousand years of careful observation and Western psychology had none until about 1980.

Descartes, in the 1640s, made the split official and made a mess. Mind and body are two different substances, he argued, meeting somewhere in the brain. This is dualism, and its problem is immediate: if the mind is not physical, what exactly does it push on to make an arm move? Nobody has ever answered that. What Descartes did get right is that a great deal of behaviour is mechanical — pull your hand from a flame and the withdrawal happens before you feel the pain, which is exactly the reflex arc physiology later confirmed.

And in the 1800s the brain started giving up localised secrets. Paul Broca examined a patient who could understand everything and say only one syllable; after the man died Broca found the damage in a specific patch of the left frontal lobe. Carl Wernicke found a different patch producing fluent, grammatical, completely meaningless speech. Suddenly "the mind is what the brain does" was not a philosophical position. It was an anatomical finding.

Wundt and the attempt to observe yourself

Wundt's method was introspection, but a strict laboratory version of it: trained observers reporting the raw elements of their conscious experience under controlled conditions. Show them a metronome and they were not to say "I heard a rhythm" but to break the experience into its components of sensation and feeling.

His student Edward Titchener took this to America and pushed it to its limit, trying to build a periodic table of the mind out of elementary sensations.

It collapsed, and the way it collapsed is the important part. Different trained observers in different laboratories reported different elements for the same stimulus, and there was no way to settle who was right, because the only evidence was the report itself. When two thermometers disagree you can check them against a third. When two introspectionists disagree there is nothing to check against.

What survives: the laboratory itself, reaction time as a measure, and the discovery that attention has a measurable cost. What died: the belief that you can find out how the mind works by carefully watching your own.

William James and the American turn

In Boston, William James was writing what is still the most readable book the field has produced, The Principles of Psychology (1890). He rejected the search for elements. Consciousness, he said, is not built of bricks — it is a stream, continuous, always changing, always selecting.

James asked a different question about any mental feature: not what is it made of but what is it for. This is functionalism, and it is the ancestor of every modern evolutionary account of why we feel fear or disgust or love.

He also left two ideas that this volume uses directly. The first is his theory of emotion — that you do not tremble because you are afraid, you are afraid because you tremble — which is wrong as stated and half right in a way 4.1 unpacks properly. The second is his observation about habit, that most of a life is running on rails laid down early, and that the practical response is to be extremely deliberate about which rails you lay. Part 8 is essentially a modern working-out of that chapter.

Freud, and what to keep from him

Sigmund Freud, working in Vienna from the 1890s, was seeing patients with symptoms that had no physical cause — paralysis in an arm that was anatomically intact, blindness in working eyes. He concluded that something in the mind outside of awareness was producing them.

His system is enormous, and the honest verdict on it has three parts.

What has not held up. The specific structure of id, ego and superego is not testable and is not used in research. The psychosexual stages, the Oedipus complex and penis envy have essentially no supporting evidence. Dream interpretation as decoding of disguised wishes does not replicate. His case histories, examined by later historians, involve considerable retrospective tidying — in several the outcome he reported as a cure was not one. And crucially, his framework can explain any outcome after the fact, which sounds like strength and is the exact opposite: a theory that cannot be contradicted by any observation is not making a claim.

What has held up, substantially. That a large majority of mental processing happens outside awareness is now simply true, established by hundreds of studies with methods Freud never had — though the modern unconscious is less a seething cauldron of forbidden wishes and more a very fast automatic processing system. That people defend themselves against unwelcome truths in patterned ways is real, and several of his defences have decent evidence: denial, projection, rationalisation, displacement. That early relationships shape adult ones is real, and Part 9.5 gives it a proper evidence base under a different name. That talking to an attentive listener about your difficulties can help is real, and he invented the format.

And one thing that is his alone. He established that a person's suffering is worth listening to in detail, over time, without hurry. Every therapy in Part 15, including the ones that reject everything else about him, inherited the room.

Behaviourism: forty years of refusing to guess

In 1913 John B. Watson lost patience with the whole business of unobservable inner states and published a manifesto. Psychology should study only what can be observed: stimulus in, behaviour out. Consciousness is not data.

Ivan Pavlov had already supplied the first mechanism. A dog salivates at food. Ring a bell just before the food, repeatedly, and eventually the bell alone produces the saliva. This is classical conditioning — a neutral thing gets paired with something that already produces a reaction, and takes on the reaction itself.

That is not a fact about dogs. It is the mechanism behind a large fraction of human emotional life, and you will meet it repeatedly in this volume. A phobia is a conditioned fear. A song that makes you sad is a conditioned response. Anxiety at the sound of a particular person's footsteps on the stairs is classical conditioning, and 13.6 explains why that specific example matters so much.

B. F. Skinner then added the other half. Behaviour followed by a good outcome increases; behaviour followed by a bad one decreases. This is operant conditioning, and Skinner's genuinely important discovery inside it was about schedules. A behaviour rewarded every single time is easy to extinguish — stop the reward and the behaviour stops fairly quickly. A behaviour rewarded unpredictably, sometimes becomes extraordinarily persistent.

That last sentence is the design principle behind slot machines, and behind the pull-to-refresh gesture on your phone. Sometimes there is something new. Usually there is not. That is precisely the schedule that produces the most stubborn behaviour known to psychology, and it was published in 1957.

Why behaviourism fell. Language killed it. Children produce sentences they have never heard and could never have been rewarded for, and they make errors like "goed" and "runned" that they were never taught. In 1959 Noam Chomsky pointed this out in a review of Skinner's book on language, and the argument was effectively over: something structured is happening inside, and refusing to talk about it is not scientific rigour, it is a self-imposed blindfold.

What survives: conditioning is real and is the basis of the most effective treatment for phobias and obsessive-compulsive disorder in existence (14.3). Reinforcement schedules are real. Behaviour change works better than insight for a great many problems, which is why Part 8 spends more time on environment design than on motivation.

The cognitive revolution

Through the 1950s several things arrived at once: information theory, the digital computer, Chomsky's grammar, and a set of experiments that behaviourism simply could not describe.

The computer supplied the missing permission. Here was a physical machine that unmistakably had internal states — memory registers, stored programs, intermediate representations — and you could talk about them precisely without any mysticism at all. If a machine can have an internal representation, so can a person, and you can hypothesise about it and test the hypothesis.

Two experiments define the shift. In 1956 George Miller published a paper on the number of items people can hold in mind at once, arriving at the famous seven plus or minus two. In 1971 Roger Shepard and Jacqueline Metzler showed people pairs of three-dimensional block shapes and asked whether they were the same object rotated. The time people took increased in a straight line with the angle of rotation. That is a stunning result: it means people are doing something that behaves like physically turning an object in their head, at a roughly constant speed, and the graph proves it.

The straight line is the finding: the mind appears to rotate an internal image at a steady rate, so a bigger rotation takes proportionally longer. There is no way to describe this in terms of stimulus and response alone.

The mind was back, and it was allowed to have contents, because the contents made measurable predictions.

The other three strands

Humanistic psychology arrived in the 1950s as a protest against both Freud and Skinner: one treats you as a battlefield of drives, the other as a pigeon. Carl Rogers and Abraham Maslow insisted on the person's own experience, on growth, and on the conditions under which people flourish. Rogers' specification of what a helper must provide — genuine warmth, unconditional acceptance, accurate understanding — turned out to be one of the best-supported findings in therapy research, and Part 15 builds on it. Maslow's pyramid of needs, by contrast, is one of the most famous diagrams in the world and has never had good evidence behind it; he did not draw it as a pyramid and did not claim the levels must be climbed in order.

Biological psychology grew with the tools. Brain imaging from the 1990s, genetics, and the study of neurotransmitters gave real mechanisms for things previously described only from outside. It also produced a decade of overclaiming, which 2.1 addresses directly: a coloured blob on a brain scan is a statistical map of blood flow differences, not a picture of a thought.

Evolutionary psychology asks James' question with modern tools: what problem did this feature solve for our ancestors? At its best it explains things nothing else does — why disgust is triggered by exactly the things most likely to carry disease, why fear of snakes is learned in one trial and fear of electrical sockets is not. At its worst it produces untestable stories that justify whatever the author already believed. The test to apply is the one from 1.1: does the claim predict something specific that could have come out otherwise?

Where it stands now

The field today is not organised by school. Almost nobody calls themselves a behaviourist or a Freudian. It is organised by question and by method, and any serious researcher will use whichever level of explanation the question demands.

It also went through a crisis, starting around 2011, when it became clear that a substantial fraction of published psychology findings did not hold up when other laboratories tried to repeat them. That is the subject of the next page, and it is the single most important thing to understand before believing anything else in this volume — including the parts of this volume that turn out to be wrong.

What to do with this

Take one thing from each school and keep it as a working tool.

From Wundt: if you want to know something about your mind, find a way to count it. Not "I think I get angry a lot" but a mark on a note for each time, for two weeks. Almost nobody does this and it changes almost everything, because your memory of your own patterns is unreliable in exactly the ways Part 2 describes.

From James: ask what a feeling is for before trying to remove it. Anger, guilt, anxiety and even envy are doing jobs. Part 4 works through each one's job.

From Freud: assume that a reaction of yours that seems out of proportion to the event has a cause you have not identified yet, and that the cause is probably older than the event. That single assumption, applied honestly, is most of what self-counselling is (15.7).

From Pavlov and Skinner: when you want to change a behaviour, change what happens immediately before it and immediately after it, before you try to change how you feel about it. Feelings are hard to move directly. Cues and consequences are easy to move, and the feelings follow.

From the cognitive revolution: between the thing that happens and your reaction there is an interpretation, and the interpretation is where the leverage is. Almost the whole of Part 5 and Part 15 lives in that gap.
