4.1 — What an Emotion Actually Is
In 1962 Stanley Schachter and Jerome Singer injected volunteers with adrenaline and told them it was a vitamin compound being tested on vision. The injection produces a racing heart, shaky hands, a flushed face — the physical signature of strong emotion, with no cause attached.
Some participants were warned about these side effects. Others were not.
Everyone then waited in a room with another "participant" who was actually working for the experimenters, and who behaved in one of two ways: giddy and playful, throwing paper aeroplanes; or increasingly irritated, eventually storming out over an offensive questionnaire.
The participants who had been told to expect the physical effects felt nothing much. They had an explanation: it is the injection.
The participants who had not been told caught the mood of the room. With the playful actor they reported feeling happy. With the angry one they reported feeling angry. Same drug, same body, opposite emotions — decided by what was available to explain the sensation.
The details of this study have been criticised and parts of it have not replicated cleanly, so do not take it as proof. Take it as the clearest illustration of an idea that a great deal of later work supports: an emotion is not a signal your body sends you. It is a state your brain constructs out of a bodily condition plus an interpretation.
The three components
Every emotion has three parts, and separating them is the beginning of being able to do anything about them.
A bodily state. Heart rate, breathing, muscle tension, gut, temperature, the hormones released. This is fast, largely automatic, and produced by the machinery in 2.1.
An interpretation. What this state is about, what caused it, what it means. Largely automatic too, and heavily shaped by expectation (2.6).
An urge to act. Anger pushes towards confrontation, fear towards escape, disgust towards expulsion, shame towards hiding. The urge is not the action, and the gap between them is where every technique in Part 5 operates.
Watch how this decomposes an ordinary moment. Your manager sends a two-word reply. Your stomach tightens and your face warms — the bodily state, already underway before you have thought anything. Your mind supplies "he's annoyed with me" — the interpretation, arriving so fast it feels like perception rather than inference. And you feel a pull to write a long justifying message — the urge.
Change the interpretation and the emotion changes, with the same body. "He's in back-to-back meetings" produces a different feeling from the identical stomach. This is not a trick and it is not positive thinking; it is a description of how the state was assembled in the first place.
Where the bodily part comes from
You have a sense you were probably never taught to name: interoception, the perception of your own internal state. Heartbeat, breathing, gut, muscle tension, temperature, that vague quality of feeling well or unwell.
This is the raw material of emotion, and people differ enormously in how accurately they read it. Measured by, for example, how well someone can count their own heartbeats without taking a pulse, interoceptive accuracy varies widely — and people who are better at it tend to have clearer, more differentiated emotional experience.
Two practical implications follow immediately.
Your emotions run on your physical state, so hunger, tiredness, illness, caffeine, pain and dehydration are not separate from your mood — they are partly made of it. The word "hangry" is a joke about a real mechanism, and 2.8's instruction to check your sleep before diagnosing a psychological problem is the same point.
Interoception is trainable, which is one of the reasons body scan practice (7.4) shows up in emotional regulation programmes. You are not learning to relax. You are improving the resolution of the instrument.
What the brain adds
The bodily state on its own is remarkably crude. What you can detect directly is roughly two dimensions:
Pleasant or unpleasant, and activated or quiet. Together these are called core affect, and every feeling sits somewhere on that map.
Everything finer than that — is this jealousy or hurt, irritation or disappointment — is built, using the concepts you have, the situation you are in, and your model of what usually causes this.
Which raises the argument the field is currently having.
The basic emotions view, associated with Paul Ekman, holds that a handful of emotions are biologically given, each with its own pattern and its own universal facial expression. Anger, fear, disgust, sadness, happiness, surprise.
The constructed emotion view, associated with Lisa Feldman Barrett, holds that there are no fixed emotional programmes. There is core affect, and then the brain categorises it using learned concepts, in the way it categorises a colour or an object.
What the evidence supports, honestly. Very consistent physiological signatures for each named emotion have proved hard to find — the same emotion produces different bodily patterns in different people and situations. Facial expressions are more variable and more culturally shaped than the classic account claimed; the strong version of universal expressions has not held up. And emotional concepts genuinely differ across languages, with words for states that have no English equivalent.
But the strong constructivist claim is also disputed, and there are consistent findings on threat responses and on cross-cultural recognition that fit poorly with a purely learned account.
The practical position, which both camps would accept: the bodily side is real and partly given, the labelling side is real and heavily learned, and the labelling side is the one you can change. That is enough to work with, and the rest is an open argument you are not required to settle.
What emotions are for
They are not noise on top of thinking. They are the system that decides what matters, and what happens without them is instructive.
The neurologist Antonio Damasio described patients with damage to a specific frontal region who retained intelligence and reasoning while losing normal emotional response. They did not become coldly rational super-deciders. They became unable to decide anything. One patient could analyse the pros and cons of two appointment dates for half an hour and not choose. Without an emotional weighting, every option is merely a list of features, and there is no reason to prefer any of them.
So: emotion assigns value. Each one has a job.
Fear — a threat is present; prepare to avoid or escape. Anger — something is wrong, a boundary or a standard has been crossed; push back. Sadness — something is lost; slow down, withdraw, signal for support. Disgust — this is contaminating; expel and avoid. Shame — my standing with the group is at risk; hide and appease. Guilt — I harmed someone I care about; repair it. Joy — this is good; do more, and share it. Love and affection — this bond is worth investing in.
No emotion on that list is a malfunction. Each one is a signal about your situation, and the useful question when a feeling arrives is never "how do I get rid of this" but "what is it reporting, and is the report accurate?" 4.2 works through all of them one at a time.
Emotion, feeling, mood, temperament
Four words that get used interchangeably and mean different things.
Emotion — short, has an object, has a cause you can usually name. Minutes.
Feeling — the conscious experience of the emotion. You can have the bodily state without noticing it, which is exactly what happens when someone realises three hours later that they have been angry all afternoon.
Mood — longer, hours to days, diffuse, and frequently has no identifiable object. Mood biases what you notice and how you interpret it, so a low mood manufactures evidence for itself (2.6).
Temperament — the baseline you were largely born with, stable across a life. Part 9.
Mixing these up produces real errors. Trying to find the cause of a mood the way you would find the cause of an emotion often fails, because there may not be one — the honest answer is sometimes "I slept badly and it is raining." And treating a temperament as a mood leads to trying to fix something that does not need fixing.
How long an emotion lasts
You may have heard that an emotion lasts ninety seconds and everything after that is you keeping it alive. The specific number comes from a neuroanatomist's memoir rather than from a controlled study, so treat it as a figure of speech.
What is well supported is the underlying shape. The immediate physiological surge is brief — a stress response peaks and begins clearing within minutes (6.2). Studies asking people to record emotional episodes find that most emotions are short, and that the ones lasting hours or days are almost always the ones being rehearsed: thought about, replayed, argued with, justified.
Which means the persistence of an emotion is usually a thinking phenomenon rather than a chemical one. The chemistry is finished; the thoughts are re-triggering it. That is not a criticism — it is the most hopeful fact in this Part, because it identifies exactly where the leverage is. 5.4 and 5.5 are about nothing else.
What to do with this
Split the three components when something hits you. Out loud or on paper, in this order:
Body: where do I feel it, and what is it doing? Chest tight, jaw set, hands cold. Interpretation: what am I telling myself this means? Urge: what does it want me to do?
Doing this takes twenty seconds and it changes the situation immediately, for a mechanical reason rather than a mystical one: naming the components moves you from being inside the state to observing it, and — as 4.3 shows with the evidence — that act alone reduces its intensity.
Check the body first, always. Before accepting any interpretation, ask: how much sleep, when did I last eat, am I in pain, how many demands have there been today. A large fraction of what feels like an emotional problem is a physiological one wearing a story.
Question the interpretation, not the feeling. The feeling is real and is not up for debate. The story attached to it is a hypothesis and frequently wrong. "I feel dismissed" is a fact about you. "He dismissed me" is a claim about him, and they are not the same claim.
And treat the urge as information, not instruction. Anger's urge to confront is telling you something matters. It is not telling you to send the message now. The whole practical skill of Part 5 is holding those two apart for long enough.
