6.1 — What the Word "Stress" Actually Means
In 1936 a young endocrinologist in Montreal named Hans Selye was injecting rats with ovarian extract to see what it did. The rats developed enlarged adrenal glands, shrunken immune tissue and stomach ulcers.
Then he ran his control group, injecting them with a saline solution that should have done nothing.
They developed the same three changes.
Selye kept going. He exposed rats to cold, to heat, to surgery, to being restrained, to exhausting exercise, to toxins. Every sufficiently unpleasant thing produced the same triad of physical changes. He concluded that the body has a single, non-specific response to any demand placed on it, and he needed a word for it.
He borrowed one from engineering, where stress is the force applied to a material and strain is the deformation it produces. He later admitted he had picked the wrong one — what he was describing was the strain, the body's response, not the force. By then the word had escaped and it was too late.
That confusion is still with us, and it is the reason people talk past each other about this subject constantly.
The three things the word is doing
The stressor — the thing out there. A deadline, an illness, a difficult relative, a commute, noise, a hostile email.
The stress response — what happens in your body. The subject of 6.2.
The feeling — being stressed, the subjective experience.
These three come apart all the time, and noticing which one you mean fixes several confusions at once.
You can have a large stressor and a small response, which is what happens when you are well rested, in control, and have done this before. You can have a large response with no obvious stressor, which is what happens in chronic activation (6.5) or when the stressor is something you have stopped noticing. And you can have a strong physiological response with little subjective feeling, which is extremely common in people who have been running hot for years and have recalibrated their sense of normal.
Whenever you say "I am stressed", ask which of the three you are reporting. The answer determines whether the fix is out there, in your body, or in how you are reading the situation.
Why the same event does not stress everybody
Selye thought the response was non-specific and driven by the stressor. He was partly wrong, and the correction is the single most useful idea in this Part.
Richard Lazarus's work established that what determines the stress response is not the event but your appraisal of it, and that the appraisal has two parts happening almost simultaneously.
Primary appraisal: is this a problem for me? Is anything I care about at stake — my safety, my standing, my money, someone I love?
Secondary appraisal: can I handle it? Do I have the resources, skills, time, help and control to cope with this?
Stress is what you get when the first answer is yes and the second is no.
This is why one person finds a presentation exhilarating and another finds it terrifying, with the same heart rate. Same demand, different assessment of resources.
The practical consequence is large. Most people try to reduce stress by reducing demands, which is frequently impossible. The other side of the balance is usually more movable: more skill, more time, more help, more information, more control over how the thing is done. Anything that raises your estimate of your resources lowers the response, and much of Part 6 is about that side.
Control is the variable that matters most
Across the research, one factor keeps coming out as decisive.
In animal studies, two animals receive identical shocks; one can press a lever to stop them and the other cannot. Same physical exposure, and the animal without control develops the ulcers.
In humans, the same pattern appears in the Whitehall studies of British civil servants — a large, long-running programme that found a clear gradient in cardiovascular disease running down the employment hierarchy, with lower-grade staff faring worse. The finding that reframed the subject was that the gradient did not run with workload. Senior staff had more demands and better health. What tracked the illness was low control over how and when the work was done.
The general model, from Robert Karasek, is now standard: high demand plus low control is the harmful combination. High demand with high control is not merely tolerable but is where people do their best work.
A closely related factor is predictability. An unpredictable stressor produces a larger response than a predictable one of the same size, which is why waiting for news is often worse than bad news, and why an unclear deadline is worse than a tight one.
And a third: reward. Sustained high effort with low recognition — the effort-reward imbalance model — predicts poor outcomes independently of workload.
So when you are trying to work out why something is grinding you down, the questions are not only how much is there. They are how much say do I have, how much can I predict, and is any of it recognised.
Whether "stress is bad for you" is even true
Two honest corrections to the popular story.
Short-term stress is useful. The response evolved to help you meet demands, and it does: attention narrows, energy is mobilised, and performance on a well-practised task improves. Acute stress also appears to enhance certain immune functions temporarily. The problem is duration, not existence.
And how you think about your stress may matter somewhat. Research by Alia Crum and colleagues found that people who view stress as enhancing rather than debilitating show different physiological profiles and outcomes. There is also work suggesting the association between high stress and mortality is concentrated among people who believe stress is harmful.
Handle these findings with care. They come from a research area that has produced some effects smaller than the popular retellings, and reframing your appraisal is not a substitute for changing a genuinely harmful situation. A stress mindset intervention will not fix a job with no control in it, and telling someone in that position to think about it differently is close to insulting.
The defensible version: arousal reinterpreted as readiness performs better than arousal fought against (4.6), and that applies to the presentation, not to the year.
What the word does not mean
Not the same as anxiety. Anxiety is anticipation of threat with no necessary demand attached. 6.9 separates them properly, because using one word for both leads people to apply the wrong remedy.
Not the same as being busy. Busy with control, purpose and recovery is not stressful in the damaging sense. Idle with no control and no predictability is.
Not the same as pressure. Pressure with adequate resources produces performance. Pressure without them produces the response.
And not a character weakness. The response is physiological and largely automatic. People who "handle stress well" mostly have more resources, more control, better recovery, or lower baseline load (5.9) — not more virtue.
What to do with this
Ask which of the three you mean. Stressor, response, or feeling. Then work on that one.
Run the balance explicitly on whatever is currently grinding you. Two columns on paper. Left: every demand and what is at stake. Right: every resource — skill, time, money, help available, control, experience, information. Most people find the right column is much shorter than it should be, because they have never listed it and have forgotten what they have.
Then attack the right column, because it is usually the movable one. Who could help. What information would remove the uncertainty. What could you learn in a week. What could you ask for.
And ask the three diagnostic questions about anything chronic: how much control do I have, how predictable is it, and is the effort recognised? A situation that scores badly on all three will grind you down regardless of how well you cope, and the answer there is to change the situation rather than to cope harder.
