15.5 — Quantum Mysticism, and How to Spot the Con
A specific and very profitable genre exists: physics vocabulary attached to claims physics does not support.
And this chapter is a detector, because the pattern is consistent enough to be recognised in one paragraph.
The five moves
Nearly every instance uses some combination of these.
One: the observer
The claim: quantum mechanics shows that consciousness creates reality, because a system remains in superposition until it is observed.
What "observation" actually means in quantum mechanics: an interaction with another physical system that produces a record.
A photographic plate does it. A detector does it. An air molecule does it. No mind is required and no mind has ever been shown to be required.
The confusion arose because "observer" and "measurement" are unfortunate words for what is a physical interaction, and the mistake was made early — a few of the founders speculated about consciousness — and it has been repeated ever since.
And decoherence explains the practical situation without any of it: a quantum system interacting with its environment loses coherence extremely rapidly, and "extremely rapidly" here means unimaginably fast for anything larger than a molecule.
Which is why you never see superposition in a cat.
Two: entanglement
The claim: entangled particles are connected across any distance, therefore everything is connected, therefore your thoughts affect distant events.
What entanglement is: two particles prepared together have correlated properties, so measuring one tells you about the other regardless of distance.
What it is not: a way of sending anything.
This is not a technological limitation. It is a theorem — the no-communication theorem — and it is as solid as anything in physics. The correlations are real, and no information passes, and you cannot influence the far particle by anything you do to the near one.
And entanglement is fragile. It is destroyed by interaction with the environment, which is happening to everything in your body continuously.
Three: everything is energy
The claim: matter is energy, therefore everything is one, therefore thoughts, being energy, affect matter.
What is true: mass and energy are related, and Volume IV covers the relation.
**What is false: "energy" in physics is a precisely defined quantity with units, measured in joules. It is not a substance and not a field of vibration and not a thing that flows between people.
The word in the popular usage is doing no physical work at all. It is a placeholder that sounds technical.
Test: ask how many joules. The question is always unanswerable, and that is diagnostic.
Four: vibration and frequency
The claim: everything vibrates at a frequency, so raise yours.
What is true: 15.3 — atoms vibrate, fields oscillate, and matter has wave properties.
What is false: none of it means what the claim needs. A "high vibration" is not a physical quantity. There is no scale, no unit and no instrument.
And the giveaway is that the claim is never quantitative. Physics is quantitative in every case; this is never.
Five: the appeal to strangeness
The structure: quantum mechanics is genuinely strange, therefore other strange claims are supported by it.
This is not an argument. The strangeness of one well-tested theory is not evidence for an unrelated claim.
And what makes it persuasive is exactly that the physics really is strange — the audience knows that, cannot evaluate the specifics, and reasonably concludes that if that is true, anything might be.
The detector
Five questions, and anything failing two is almost certainly a con.
Is there a number? Real physics predicts quantities. If the claim cannot be stated with a unit, it is not physics.
What would falsify it? (15.1.) If nothing could, it is not a physical claim.
Are the technical words doing work, or decorating? Remove "quantum," "energy," "frequency" and "vibration" from the sentence and see whether anything is left. Frequently the residue is an ordinary self-help claim.
Is a physicist making the claim about their own field? Not a physicist writing about consciousness, which is not their field; a physicist making a claim about physics.
And what is being sold? Nearly always something — a course, a book, a supplement, a device.
Why it works
Worth understanding rather than only mocking, because it explains the persistence.
Physics has enormous authority and is almost entirely unavailable to non-specialists. Which is a combination that invites borrowing.
The genuine strangeness makes the borrowed claims plausible.
It offers what people want: that mind matters, that everything is connected, and that you have more influence over your circumstances than you appear to.
And the last one is the real mechanism. The claim is always, at bottom, that your thoughts control your outcomes — which is comforting when things are going well and cruel when they are not, because it implies that whatever happened to you was produced by your own thinking.
That is the harm, and it is the same structure as 14.5's "it is deserved," rebuilt in modern vocabulary.
What is actually interesting and unresolved
Because dismissing the genre should not dismiss the real questions.
The measurement problem is a genuine open problem in the foundations of physics. Several interpretations exist — many-worlds, pilot-wave, objective collapse, and others — and they are empirically equivalent so far, and physicists disagree.
One minority interpretation does give consciousness a role, and it is a minority position and it is not the mainstream and it is not what the popular claims describe.
Consciousness is genuinely unexplained (15.2).
And whether the physical laws could have been otherwise, and why there is anything at all, are open questions that physics does not answer and may not be able to.
Which means: there are real mysteries. They are not the ones being sold, and the selling makes the real ones harder to discuss, because anybody raising them is now assumed to be doing this.
And the honest version of the parallel
Because 15.3 drew one and it has to be kept in bounds.
Several traditions concluded that reality is process rather than substance, and physics concluded the same.
That is a structural convergence and it is genuinely interesting.
It is not evidence for anything else the traditions claim. The convergence is at the level of "things change and nothing is fixed," which was available to anybody who watched a river, and the traditions did not have and did not anticipate the mechanism.
A tradition that got one general thing right by observation has not thereby been confirmed in its metaphysics — and the temptation to run that inference is exactly what this chapter is about.
What to carry from this page
Observation in quantum mechanics means physical interaction that produces a record. A detector does it. No mind required.
Entanglement cannot transmit anything. That is a theorem, not a limitation.
Ask how many joules. It is the fastest single test available.
Remove the technical words and see what is left.
And notice that the claim is always, underneath, that your thoughts produce your outcomes. Which is 14.5's "it is deserved" in new packaging, and it does the same harm to the same people.
