4.2 — Egypt
Cleopatra lived closer in time to the first Moon landing than to the building of the Great Pyramid.
That is not a trick of phrasing. The Great Pyramid was completed around 2560 BCE. Cleopatra died in 30 BCE — about 2,530 years later. Apollo 11 landed 1,999 years after that. When Cleopatra visited the pyramids they were already ancient monuments to her, older than the Colosseum is to us.
Egyptian civilisation ran for roughly three thousand years with recognisable continuity — the same gods, the same script, the same basic institutions, the same art conventions. Nothing else in this volume comes close. This chapter is about why that was possible, and about what it was actually like to live in it.
The gift of the river, and why the phrase is precise
Herodotus called Egypt "the gift of the Nile" and the phrase is exact.
Egypt gets essentially no rain. Cairo averages around 25 millimetres a year. Without the Nile there is nothing there but desert, which is why the inhabited land is a green ribbon a few kilometres wide, plus the delta, in the middle of the Sahara. Satellite images make it obvious: a thin green line and a fan, surrounded by sand.
And the Nile behaved beautifully, which is the crucial contrast with Mesopotamia. It rose in July, peaked in September, and fell by October. Every year, at the same time, gently, driven by the Ethiopian monsoon rains far to the south. It deposited fresh silt and it flushed salts out of the soil — so Egypt never suffered the salinisation that destroyed southern Mesopotamia (Chapter 4.1).
The flood also fixed the calendar and the arithmetic. Egyptians measured the flood at Nilometers — graduated wells and stairways — and both taxation and expectations were set by the reading. Too low meant famine; too high meant destroyed villages; the narrow band in between meant a good year. Predicting it mattered enormously, and the Egyptian civil calendar of 365 days is tied to the flood's annual return.
Two more geographical gifts.
Deserts on both sides, cataracts to the south and sea to the north made Egypt unusually hard to invade. This is the main structural reason for its political continuity: Mesopotamia was open on every side and was conquered repeatedly; Egypt was a corridor with walls.
And the wind blows south while the river flows north. So you sail upstream and drift downstream. Two-way transport along the whole length of the country, for free, which is why Egypt could be governed as one unit while Mesopotamia fragmented into city-states.
The state, and the man at the centre
Unification, traditionally under a king named Narmer around 3100 BCE, joined Upper Egypt (the southern valley) and Lower Egypt (the northern delta), and the double crown of the two lands remained the symbol of kingship for three thousand years.
The pharaoh was not a king who claimed divine support. He was held to be a god — the living Horus, and after death Osiris. His function was to maintain maat — a word covering order, truth, justice, balance and the correct working of the cosmos, against isfet, which is chaos. The flood came, the sun rose, and the crops grew because the pharaoh performed his role.
That is an extremely efficient arrangement for a ruler, and it explains a great deal: why Egyptian art depicts the king enormous and everyone else small, why his tomb was a national project, and why the state could mobilise labour on the scale it did.
The administration underneath was sophisticated. A vizier, nomarchs governing the forty-two provinces called nomes, a treasury, granaries, and scribes everywhere. Scribes were the professional class, and the surviving school texts are unembarrassed about it — one famous instruction to a student lists the miseries of every other trade in detail and concludes that the scribe alone is spared. Literacy is estimated at perhaps one percent of the population.
Taxation was in kind, since there was no coinage until very late. Grain, labour, cloth and cattle were assessed, measured and stored, and the state was in effect the largest economic actor in the country.
The pyramids: how, and by whom

They were not built by slaves, and this is one of the better-established corrections in modern archaeology.
The evidence is direct. Workers' villages have been excavated at Giza, with bakeries, breweries, dormitories and administrative buildings. The bones of cattle, sheep and goats indicate the workforce ate meat regularly, which is not slave rations. There is a cemetery of workers, laid out with care, immediately beside the pyramids — slaves are not buried in the shadow of the monument they built. Skeletons show healed fractures that had been set properly, meaning there was medical care. And graffiti left by work gangs on hidden blocks record team names such as "Friends of Khufu" and "Drunkards of Menkaure", which is not the tone of forced labour.
The workforce appears to have been organised as a national labour obligation, drawn largely from farmers during the flood season when the fields were under water and there was nothing agricultural to do. A permanent skilled core plus a rotating seasonal mass is the current picture, with estimates around 20,000 to 30,000 at peak rather than the hundreds of thousands Herodotus reported.
How, mechanically. No single method is proven for every stage, but the constraints are well understood and the plausible answers are ordinary.
Quarrying: limestone was cut locally at Giza for the core, fine white limestone was brought from Tura across the river for the casing, and granite for the internal chambers came from Aswan, 900 kilometres upstream, moved by barge on the flood.
Moving blocks: dragged on wooden sledges. A wall painting from a tomb at Deir el-Bersha shows a colossal statue on a sledge with a man pouring liquid onto the sand in front of it — long dismissed as ritual, and then shown experimentally in 2014 to roughly halve the required force, because damp sand does not pile up ahead of a sledge the way dry sand does. The Egyptians knew a piece of soil mechanics that took until this century to be rediscovered.
Raising blocks: ramps, of some configuration. A single straight ramp to the top would need to be enormous, so proposals include long ramps for the lower courses combined with spiral ramps, zigzag ramps on one face, or internal ramps. A papyrus archive found at Wadi al-Jarf in 2013 — the oldest inscribed papyri known — is the logbook of an official named Merer, who commanded a team ferrying Tura limestone to Giza. It is a real, dated, administrative record from the construction of the Great Pyramid, and it describes shipping and canals rather than anything mysterious.
The precision is genuinely remarkable. The base is level to within about 2 centimetres across 230 metres, and the sides are aligned to true north to within a small fraction of a degree — achieved almost certainly by stellar observation, since the magnetic compass did not exist.
Mummification, and the belief behind it
The practice follows from a specific idea about what a person is. Egyptians held that a human comprised several parts, including the ka (a life force needing sustenance), the ba (an aspect that could move about, often shown as a bird with a human head), and the akh (the transfigured spirit of the successful dead). For these to persist, the body had to persist. Hence preservation, hence a tomb, hence goods and food for the afterlife.
The technique, developed over centuries: the internal organs were removed and stored in jars, except the heart, which was left in place because it was regarded as the seat of thought and would be needed for judgement. The brain was removed through the nose and discarded, being thought unimportant. The body was packed and covered in natron, a naturally occurring drying salt, for about forty days, then washed, oiled, resinated and wrapped in linen with amulets between the layers. The whole process took around seventy days.
The judgement scene is the heart of the belief. The dead person's heart is weighed against the feather of maat. If it balances, they proceed. If it is heavy with wrongdoing, it is eaten by a waiting monster and the person ends. The associated text, the so-called Book of the Dead, includes a negative confession — a list of things the deceased declares they did not do, which includes murder and theft but also causing pain, stealing from the poor, polluting water and holding back the flow of water in season. It is a moral code stated in the negative, from four thousand years ago.
The long arc
Old Kingdom (~2686–2181 BCE): the pyramid age, centralised power. Ended in collapse, with a drought around 2200 BCE — the 4.2-kiloyear event again (Chapter 2.8) — implicated alongside the growing independence of provincial nomarchs.
First Intermediate Period: fragmentation, and a literature of despair. Texts from this period describe the world turned upside down, the poor wearing fine linen and the rich in rags. Whether that is social observation or elite complaint is a fair question, but the sense of a collapsed order is unmistakable.
Middle Kingdom (~2055–1650 BCE): reunification, expansion into Nubia, and the classic period of Egyptian literature.
Second Intermediate Period: the Hyksos, a Semitic-speaking people, took control of the delta. They brought the horse and chariot, the composite bow and improved bronze working — and their expulsion produced a militarised Egypt that turned outward.
New Kingdom (~1550–1069 BCE): the empire. Thutmose III campaigned into Syria; Hatshepsut, one of a handful of female pharaohs, ruled for two decades and sent a famous trading expedition to Punt; Akhenaten attempted to replace the whole pantheon with worship of the sun disc Aten, moved the capital, and had his reforms undone immediately after his death — his son Tutankhamun, who reigned briefly and died young, is famous only because his small tomb was the one that escaped robbery. Ramesses II reigned about 66 years, fought the Hittites at Kadesh, and signed what is the oldest surviving international peace treaty, copies of which exist in both Egyptian and Hittite.
Then the collapse of about 1200 BCE (Chapter 4.6), which Egypt survived in reduced form, and a long late period under Libyan, Nubian, Assyrian and Persian rule, then Alexander in 332 BCE, then the Greek Ptolemaic dynasty — of whom Cleopatra was the last — and then Rome in 30 BCE.
What Egypt actually knew
Medicine. The Edwin Smith papyrus, around 1600 BCE and probably copying a much older text, is a surgical manual describing 48 cases of trauma in a consistent format: examination, diagnosis, and a verdict of treatable, contestable, or untreatable. It is largely free of magic, describes the brain's surface and the effect of head injuries on the opposite side of the body, and recommends honey and mouldy bread on wounds — both of which have genuine antibacterial properties.
Mathematics. Practical and effective: fractions, area and volume calculations, an accurate formula for the volume of a truncated pyramid, and a value used for pi equivalent to about 3.16. Applied to land measurement, because the flood erased field boundaries every year and they had to be re-surveyed — which is where the Greek word geometria, earth-measuring, comes from.
Engineering and materials. Quarrying, transport, surveying, glassmaking, faience, and metalworking.
What they did not do is theory. Egyptian mathematics solves specific problems and does not prove general statements. That step is taken in Greece (Chapter 5.1), and the difference is one of the most consequential in intellectual history.
What it was like to live there
Most people were farmers, working land they did not own, paying a share in kind, subject to labour obligations, and living in mud-brick villages. Life expectancy was low, and infectious and parasitic disease — particularly schistosomiasis from irrigation water (Chapter 3.8) — was widespread; parasite eggs are found in mummies routinely.
Women's position was unusually good by ancient standards. Egyptian women could own and inherit property in their own names, initiate divorce, appear in court, conduct business, and make wills. Marriage contracts specifying a woman's property rights survive. This is genuinely exceptional compared with contemporary Mesopotamia, Greece and Rome, and it is not a modern projection — Greek writers remarked on it with surprise.
And the deal that made the whole system hold: the state took a large share, and in return it stored grain against famine, ran the irrigation, kept records of who owned what, defended the borders and maintained the cosmic order. In a country where a low flood means starvation, a granary controlled by the state is genuine insurance, and it is the strongest available answer to the question in Chapter 3.9 of why anyone accepted being ruled.
Where this shows up in your life
Your calendar. The 365-day year of twelve 30-day months plus five extra days is Egyptian. They knew it drifted — the true year is about a quarter-day longer — and mostly declined to fix it, which meant the calendar rotated through the seasons over 1,460 years. Julius Caesar took the Egyptian solar calendar, added the leap day, and gave Europe the Julian calendar (Chapter 15.1).
Paper. Papyrus, made by laying strips of the pith of a reed at right angles and pressing them, gave the Mediterranean world its writing surface for three thousand years and gave English the word "paper".
Words you use. Pharaoh, oasis, ebony, ivory, gum, and — through Greek — chemistry, from kem, the black land, which is what Egyptians called their own country after the colour of the flood silt.
And a hard-headed lesson about monuments. The pyramids were built to guarantee a king's eternal existence, and every single one was robbed, most of them within a few centuries, often by the descendants of the workers who built them. What actually survived was not the burial but the record — the papyri, the wall texts, the accounts. Chapter 3.11 said that writing outlives its writers, and Egypt is the proof.
