5.7 — The Silk Roads

Roman writers were annoyed about silk. Pliny the Elder complained that the empire was haemorrhaging money to the east — he gives a figure of 100 million sesterces a year going to India, China and Arabia — for luxuries that served no purpose. The Senate repeatedly tried to ban men from wearing it and to restrict women, on grounds of both morality and money.

They had no idea where it came from. Roman writers believed silk grew on trees, combed from leaves by a people called the Seres. The Chinese, for their part, guarded the secret of the silkworm with the death penalty, and it held for over two thousand years.

And Rome and China never traded directly. They knew of each other's existence vaguely — Chinese records call Rome Daqin, "Great Qin", a flattering name — and an embassy claiming to be from the Roman emperor reached China in 166 CE, possibly a group of merchants improving their status. Everything in between moved in relays, and that is the central fact about the Silk Roads.

The name, and what is wrong with it

"Silk Road" was coined in 1877 by the German geographer Ferdinand von Richthofen, and it is misleading in three ways.

It was not a road. It was a shifting network of caravan tracks, mountain passes, oasis stops and sea lanes.

It was not mainly about silk. Silk was the glamorous item. By volume and value the trade was in horses, grain, cotton, wool, glass, metals, furs, ceramics, paper, spices and above all slaves.

And it was not one journey. Almost nobody travelled the whole length. Goods passed through many hands, each merchant covering a section they knew, with the price rising at every transfer. Marco Polo is famous precisely because travelling end to end was extraordinary.

Who actually ran it

The Sogdians, an Iranian-speaking people from the region around Samarkand and Bukhara, were the dominant middlemen for centuries. Their language became the trade lingua franca of Central Asia, and Sogdian letters recovered from a watchtower in the Chinese desert — abandoned mail from around 313 CE — include a merchant's report of chaos in China and a furious letter from a woman stranded in Dunhuang whose husband had left her there.

The Parthians and later the Sasanians controlled the Persian corridor and taxed everything crossing it, which is a large part of why Rome kept fighting them.

Arab and Indian traders ran the maritime half, using the monsoon (Chapter 2.5), and this half carried far more tonnage than the overland routes ever did. A ship carries what a hundred camels carry.

And the trade only functioned when large states kept the routes safe. The peak periods are precisely the ones with strong empires at both ends and in the middle: Han and Rome, then Tang and the Abbasids, then the Mongol century of Chapter 7.6.

India at the centre

India was not a stop on the Silk Roads. It was one of the main destinations and one of the main producers, and this is systematically underplayed in accounts written from a China-to-Rome perspective.

Indian exports: cotton textiles — the finest in the world and in demand everywhere — pepper and other spices, indigo, precious stones, ivory, steel (Chapter 3.12), and sandalwood.

Indian imports: gold and silver, in enormous quantities, plus horses, which India could never breed adequately (Chapter 6.15), and wine, glass and coral.

The scale is documented from the Roman side. The Periplus of the Erythraean Sea, a merchant's handbook from the first century CE, lists Indian ports, what each buys and sells, and when to sail. Roman gold and silver coins are found in hoards across southern India in large numbers, particularly in Tamil Nadu and Kerala, and Roman writers complained about the drain of bullion eastward. Tamil Sangam poetry mentions Yavana — Greek or Roman — merchants and their wine, and there was a Roman trading settlement at Arikamedu near Pondicherry.

The mechanism was the monsoon. A pilot named Hippalus is credited by Greek sources with publicising the wind reversal around the first century BCE, allowing ships to sail directly across the Arabian Sea rather than hugging the coast. A round trip from Egypt to India and back could be done in one year by leaving with the southwest monsoon and returning with the northeast.

India's balance of trade with Rome was strongly favourable, and this is the beginning of a pattern that runs for nearly two thousand years: the rest of the world wanting Indian textiles and spices, and paying in silver. Chapter 6.16 shows how the East India Company was created specifically to solve that problem for Britain, and Chapter 6.17 what it did to India.

What travelled that was not goods

This is what makes the routes historically important, far more than the silk.

Buddhism. It moved out of India along the northwestern routes through Gandhara and Bactria into Central Asia, reaching China by the first century CE and becoming a major Chinese religion within a few centuries, then Korea, Japan and Tibet. The cave complexes at Bamiyan in Afghanistan, Kizil and Dunhuang in western China, and Ajanta in India are stations on that transmission.

The traffic ran both ways. Chinese pilgrims travelled to India to obtain authentic texts: Faxian in the early fifth century, Xuanzang in the seventh, who spent sixteen years travelling and studying at Nalanda and returned with hundreds of manuscripts, and Yijing, who went by sea. Their travel accounts are among the most valuable sources for Indian history of the period, because they describe what they saw without an Indian dynasty's interest in flattering itself. Chapter 6.6 uses Faxian's account of Gupta India directly.

Other religions travelled too. Manichaeism spread from Persia across Central Asia into China. Nestorian Christianity reached China by 635 CE and is recorded on a stele erected in 781 CE at Xi'an, which describes a Christian community operating with imperial permission. Zoroastrianism, Judaism and later Islam all moved along the same channels, and Kerala's Jewish and Syrian Christian communities are the maritime version of the same process, both with traditions going back to the early centuries CE.

Technologies. Paper moved west from China — reaching the Islamic world in the eighth century and Europe in the twelfth (Chapter 8.2). Silk production eventually moved west, by tradition when monks smuggled eggs to Constantinople in the sixth century in hollow canes. Chinese knowledge of the compass, gunpowder and printing all travelled westward, and Indian mathematics and astronomy travelled both ways (Chapter 3.11).

Crops. Cotton, sugarcane, citrus, rice, and later many more moved along these routes and reshaped agriculture in every region they reached.

And disease. This is the cost. The Antonine Plague of 165 CE, the Plague of Justinian from 541 CE, and the Black Death of the 1340s all appear to have travelled along these connections. Chapter 7.7 shows the plague following the exact routes of the Mongol-era trade. A connected world shares its pathogens — a general truth Chapter 3.8 established and Chapter 12.8 sees again.

What the trade was actually like

Slow, dangerous, and expensive. A caravan from Chang'an to the Mediterranean, in stages, took a year or more. The Taklamakan desert's name is popularly glossed as a warning about not coming back, and the routes skirted it through a chain of oasis towns — Kashgar, Khotan, Turfan, Dunhuang — each of which grew rich on supplying and taxing travellers.

The economics were brutal and simple. Only goods with a very high value-to-weight ratio could bear the cost of moving overland across a continent: silk, spices, gems, and precious metals. Grain and ordinary cloth could not, which is why the maritime route eventually dominated. This is also why the routes died when they did — not because anyone conquered them, but because ships got better and a sea voyage that carried a hundred times the cargo at a fraction of the cost per unit made the caravan obsolete. Chapter 8.4 covers that transition.

Money worked by a chain of trust. Merchants used bills of exchange, partnerships, letters of credit and religious or kinship networks to enforce contracts across borders where no court had jurisdiction. Chapter 9.2 shows that most of medieval and early modern finance was invented to solve exactly this problem.

The Chinese state's ambivalence

Worth stating, because it recurs. Chinese governments were never entirely comfortable with the trade. Confucian doctrine ranked merchants below farmers and artisans, on the grounds that they produced nothing. The Han maintained the routes for strategic reasons — allies against the Xiongnu, and horses — rather than for commerce.

Later, this ambivalence became decisive. In the early fifteenth century the Ming admiral Zheng He commanded seven enormous voyages reaching India, Arabia and East Africa, with fleets of hundreds of ships far larger than anything Europe had. And then the court cancelled the programme, destroyed records, and banned oceangoing shipbuilding. The reasons were fiscal, factional and strategic — the northern frontier mattered more, and the voyages were expensive prestige projects with no revenue. Chapter 7.9 and Chapter 8.4 take that decision seriously, because it is the sharpest available illustration that technological capability does not by itself determine what a society does.

Where this shows up in your life

Your food. Noodles, sugar, citrus, apricots, spinach, saffron and a long list of others moved along these routes. The Indian spice trade is why Europeans eventually sailed round Africa, and Chapter 8.4 begins exactly there.

Your religion, whichever it is. Buddhism's presence from Japan to Sri Lanka, Islam's from Morocco to Indonesia, and Christianity's in Kerala all reflect these networks.

Your numbers, which travelled from India to Baghdad to Europe (Chapter 3.11).

And a fact worth holding. The world was thoroughly interconnected two thousand years ago — goods, religions, technologies, diseases and ideas moving continuously across Eurasia. Globalisation is not a modern invention. What is modern is the speed and the volume. The pattern — connection bringing prosperity, ideas and epidemics together, and being vulnerable to the collapse of any large state along the way — is as old as the Han.
