8.1 — The Renaissance

The word means rebirth, and it was chosen by people who believed they were reviving classical antiquity after a thousand years of darkness. They invented the term "Middle Ages" for the period in between, specifically to describe it as an interval between two good periods.

That framing is propaganda and it worked so well that it is still the default. Chapter 7.2, 7.3 and 7.4 gave the reasons it is wrong. This chapter covers what actually happened, which is more interesting than the story the Renaissance told about itself.

What actually changed

Not the recovery of classical texts, which had never been entirely lost — Byzantine copyists preserved the Greek, Islamic scholars translated and extended it, and medieval European universities were teaching Aristotle from the twelfth century (Chapter 7.4).

Four things genuinely changed.

Wealth concentrated in Italian cities. Venice, Genoa, Florence and Milan grew rich on Mediterranean trade and on banking (Chapter 9.2). Wealthy laymen with no dynastic legitimacy to display commissioned art, buildings and scholarship as a way of establishing status. The Medici in Florence are the standing example: bankers who bought their way to political dominance and spent enormously on patronage.

A new orientation toward the human. Humanism in this period does not mean secularism or atheism. It means the study of the studia humanitatis — grammar, rhetoric, poetry, history and moral philosophy — as against the scholastic curriculum of logic and theology. Its practitioners were overwhelmingly Christian, and many were clergy. What changed was the subject matter: the human being in this world as a legitimate object of serious attention.

More Greek. Byzantine scholars arriving in Italy through the fifteenth century, especially after 1453 (Chapter 7.3), brought texts and the ability to read them. Plato was recovered in a way medieval Europe, which knew Aristotle far better, had not had.

And a change in how art represented the world.

The art, and the technique behind it

Linear perspective was worked out in Florence in the 1410s, by Filippo Brunelleschi, and codified by Leon Battista Alberti in 1435.

The principle. Parallel lines receding from the viewer converge on a single vanishing point on the horizon, and objects diminish in size in proportion to distance. This is a geometrical construction, not an artistic intuition — Alberti's treatise gives it as a method with a ruler.

The result is that a painting can represent a coherent three-dimensional space in which every object has a determinate position, and the viewer is placed at a specific point relative to it.

Anatomy. Artists dissected. Leonardo produced hundreds of anatomical drawings from his own dissections, including a heart study identifying the function of the aortic valve that was not confirmed until the twentieth century. Michelangelo dissected extensively. The knowledge shows in the figures.

Oil paint, developed in the Netherlands and adopted in Italy, dries slowly, which permits blending, glazing and correction. Tempera dries in minutes and forces the painter to commit. The technical change is a large part of why fifteenth-century painting looks different from fourteenth-century painting.

And Brunelleschi's dome on Florence cathedral deserves its own note. The cathedral had been built from 1296 with an opening 45 metres across that nobody knew how to roof — there was not enough timber in Tuscany for centring of that span. Brunelleschi won the commission in 1418 with a scheme for building it without centring at all: two shells, a herringbone brick pattern that locks each course so it cannot slip inward while the mortar sets, and stone and iron chains around the base to contain the outward thrust. He also designed the hoists that lifted the material. It was completed in 1436 and it is still the largest masonry dome in the world.

The people

Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519) — painter, anatomist, engineer, and the standing example of the type. He finished very little: perhaps fifteen paintings survive, several unfinished. His notebooks contain designs for flying machines, a diving apparatus, gearing, hydraulics, and geological observations including the correct inference that fossil shells on mountains meant those rocks had been sea floor (Chapter 1.1). Almost none of it was published, so almost none of it influenced anyone, which is a point about institutions rather than genius: an idea that is not communicated does not compound.

Michelangelo (1475–1564) — the David, the Sistine ceiling, the Pietà, and the dome of St Peter's.

Raphael, Botticelli, Titian, Donatello, and in the north Dürer, Van Eyck and Bruegel, whose tradition developed in parallel with a distinct emphasis on domestic detail, landscape and ordinary life.

Machiavelli (1469–1527) deserves separate treatment because he is the period's most consequential writer and the most misread. He was a Florentine diplomat who lost his position when the Medici returned, was tortured, and wrote The Prince in exile, partly as an application for employment.

What it says. That a ruler must be prepared to act against conventional morality when the survival of the state requires it; that it is safer to be feared than loved if you cannot be both; that appearing virtuous matters more than being virtuous; and that fortune governs about half of what happens and skill the rest.

Why it matters. It describes politics as it is observed rather than as it should be, deliberately, and says so — he writes that he departs from the orders of others by going to the effectual truth of the thing rather than the imagination of it. That is a methodological move, and it is the same move Chapter 8.8 credits to the scientific revolution: describe what happens, not what ought to.

And his Discourses on Livy, a much longer and less-read book, argues for republics over principalities, which makes the standard picture of him as an advocate of tyranny difficult to sustain.

What the Renaissance was not

It was not secular. Most of the art is religious, most patrons were the Church or devout laymen, and most humanists were believers.

It was not democratic or egalitarian. Florence was an oligarchy that spent much of the period under Medici control. The wealth that paid for it came from banking and trade that included slave-holding — domestic slavery existed in Renaissance Italy, and Italian merchants participated in the Black Sea slave trade.

It was not good for women. The historian Joan Kelly asked "Did women have a Renaissance?" in 1977 and answered no — noble women's political and economic roles in several respects narrowed compared with the medieval period, and the new humanist education was largely closed to them. The women who did participate — Artemisia Gentileschi as a painter, Christine de Pizan slightly earlier as a writer, Isabella d'Este as a patron — did so against the grain.

And it was not a clean break. Astrology was taken seriously by nearly everyone including astronomers. Alchemy was pursued by serious natural philosophers. Belief in magic was widespread. The great European witch hunts, which killed somewhere between 40,000 and 60,000 people, mostly women, happened in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries — during and after the Renaissance, not before it.

Where it came from, honestly

The Italian Renaissance had inputs that its own account systematically underplayed.

Arabic transmission. Chapter 7.2 covered it. Aristotle, Euclid, Ptolemy, Galen, the numerals and algebra reached Europe through Arabic and through the Toledo and Sicilian translation centres. Fibonacci learned his mathematics in North Africa. Optics — the science that underpins linear perspective — came through Ibn al-Haytham, whose Book of Optics was translated into Latin in the twelfth century and studied by exactly the people who developed perspective.

Byzantine transmission. The Greek texts and the scholars who could read them.

Chinese transmission. Paper, and then printing, and the compass and gunpowder (Chapter 7.9).

And medieval European foundations. The universities, scholastic method, Gothic engineering, and the commercial and banking instruments developed in the same Italian cities over the previous two centuries.

Stating this is not a matter of fairness. It is a matter of getting the causal chain right, and a story in which fifteenth-century Italians reached back over a thousand-year gap directly to antiquity is a story with the actual mechanism removed.

The northern Renaissance and Erasmus

North of the Alps the emphasis differed. Where Italian humanism centred on classical rhetoric and civic life, northern humanism turned the same textual methods on the Bible and the Church Fathers.

Erasmus of Rotterdam (c.1466–1536) produced a new Greek edition of the New Testament with a fresh Latin translation in 1516, and it mattered because applying scholarly text criticism to scripture showed that the standard Latin Vulgate contained mistranslations.

One example did enormous damage to the Church's position. The Vulgate rendered the Greek metanoeite as "do penance", supporting the sacramental system; Erasmus showed it means "repent", an inward change. Luther used exactly this (Chapter 8.7).

Erasmus remained Catholic and criticised Luther, and the contemporary saying that Erasmus laid the egg that Luther hatched is roughly right.

Where this shows up in your life

The idea of the individual creative genius dates from here — the artist as a named person with a distinctive style and a biography, rather than an anonymous craftsman. Vasari's Lives of the Artists (1550) invented art history and invented the artist's biography as a form.

Perspective is in every photograph, every rendering and every video game, because a camera lens produces the same projection by physics that Alberti produced by construction.

The word "Renaissance man" for someone competent across many fields.

And the general lesson is about how periods name themselves. The Renaissance decided it was a rebirth and named the preceding thousand years the middle, and that self-description became the standard periodisation of world history taught in schools on every continent. Chapter 16.4 makes the general point: whoever names an era writes its evaluation into the name.
