4.5 — The Americas: Olmec to Inca

Maya astronomers, working with no telescopes and no instruments beyond crossed sticks and a horizon, calculated the average length of the synodic period of Venus — the time between one appearance as morning star and the next — as 584 days. The modern figure is 583.92.

They also handled dates in the millions of years, using positional notation with a symbol for zero, in a system developed with no contact whatever with India, Mesopotamia or anywhere else.

This chapter is about what happened when civilisation was built entirely from scratch. It is the only genuine control experiment in human history, and it matters because it shows which features of civilisation are necessary and which are simply what happened in Eurasia.

What they had, and what they did not

No wheeled transport. Wheels were known — Mesoamerican wheeled animal figurines have been found, which are usually interpreted as toys. But a wheel is useless without something to pull it, and there was no draught animal (Chapter 3.8). So goods moved on human backs, or by canoe.

No large domesticated animals except llamas and alpacas in the Andes, which carry perhaps 30 kilograms and cannot pull a plough or a cart. No cattle, no horses, no oxen, no pigs, no sheep.

No iron. Copper and gold were worked, and Andean metallurgy was sophisticated, but the iron-working chain of Chapter 3.12 never began.

No epidemic crowd diseases, for the reason in Chapter 3.8 — which was an enormous blessing that became a catastrophe in 1492.

What they did have was maize, beans, squash, potatoes, tomatoes, chillies, cacao, tobacco, vanilla, quinoa, amaranth, cassava and cotton — a set of crops that now feeds much of the world. They had astronomy, mathematics, writing, monumental architecture, cities larger than most in contemporary Europe, roads, irrigation and terracing, and long-distance trade.

Maize, and why it is the hardest domestication known

Maize comes from teosinte, a Mexican grass. Put wild teosinte beside a maize cob and the relationship is not obvious to the eye: teosinte has a few dozen small hard seeds in two rows, each individually encased in a stony shell, on a stalk that shatters to disperse them. Maize has hundreds of soft kernels on a thick cob that does not shatter at all.

The transformation required changes in a handful of key regulatory genes, and it took roughly two to three thousand years of selection beginning around 9000 BCE in the Balsas river valley of southern Mexico. A maize cob cannot reproduce without a human to strip and plant the kernels — it is the most completely domesticated plant on Earth.

And there is a second invention attached to it that is genuinely brilliant. Maize contains niacin — vitamin B3 — in a chemically bound form the human gut cannot absorb, and it is low in the amino acid tryptophan, from which the body can make niacin. A population living mainly on maize develops pellagra, a deficiency disease causing dermatitis, diarrhoea, dementia and death.

Mesoamerican peoples soaked and cooked maize in an alkaline solution — lime, or wood ash — a process called nixtamalization. This softens the kernel, makes it grindable into dough for tortillas, improves the protein quality, and releases the bound niacin so the body can use it. Nobody understood the chemistry. Everybody who did it was healthy, and everybody who skipped it was not.

When maize was exported to Europe and Africa without the processing, pellagra followed — devastating epidemics in northern Italy, southern France, Egypt and the American South well into the twentieth century. A cultural practice carried the nutrition; the crop alone did not, and it is one of the clearest examples anywhere of the point made in Chapter 3.3 about traditional knowledge encoding chemistry nobody could explain.

Mesoamerica

The Olmec, around 1500–400 BCE on the Gulf coast, are usually treated as the founding culture — not an empire but a cultural centre whose art, ritual and calendar ideas spread.

Teotihuacan, near modern Mexico City, flourished around 100–550 CE and reached perhaps 125,000 to 200,000 people — one of the largest cities in the world at the time. It was laid out on a grid around a monumental avenue, with apartment compounds housing multi-family groups, and evidence of ethnic quarters for people from distant regions.

And it is a genuine mystery. Unlike the Maya, Teotihuacan left no readable historical texts and — strikingly — no portraits of rulers and no royal tombs of the usual kind. The art emphasises collective and religious themes. Some archaeologists have argued for a collective or council-based government, which puts it in the same interpretive category as the Indus civilisation (Chapter 4.3). It was burned around 550 CE, apparently deliberately and focused on the elite buildings, which suggests internal revolt.

The Maya, in the Yucatán and Guatemalan lowlands, reached their classic period around 250–900 CE. They were never a single empire but dozens of competing city-states — Tikal, Calakmul, Palenque, Copán — with dynasties, alliances and constant warfare.

Their achievements are the most fully documented in the Americas because their script has been deciphered, largely between the 1950s and 1980s, in one of the great intellectual detective stories of the twentieth century. The breakthrough came from recognising that the script was partly phonetic, an insight the Russian scholar Yuri Knorozov published in 1952 while working from photographs in Moscow, against the entrenched opposition of the leading Western Mayanist. We can now read Maya inscriptions, and they turn out to be dynastic history — accessions, wars, captives, marriages, and rituals — which transformed a picture of peaceful stargazing priests into one of ambitious, warring kings.

The mathematics and calendar. Base 20, positional notation, a symbol for zero. Two interlocking calendars: a 260-day ritual cycle and a 365-day solar cycle, which combine into a 52-year round. And the Long Count, a linear day count from a fixed origin, which is what allows dates in the millions of years and which produced the widely misunderstood 2012 excitement — the completion of a large cycle, which Maya texts themselves treat as a rollover rather than an ending.

The Classic Maya collapse, roughly 800–900 CE, saw the southern lowland cities abandoned over about a century. The evidence now points to a combination: severe multi-decade droughts documented in lake sediments and cave deposits, on top of a landscape already stressed by deforestation and soil erosion from intensive agriculture, plus endemic warfare and elite competition. The people did not vanish — Maya populations continued in the northern Yucatán and highlands, millions of Maya speakers live there today, and the Spanish conquered Maya polities in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

The Aztecs, properly the Mexica, arrived late — their capital Tenochtitlan was founded in 1325 on an island in Lake Texcoco, and by 1500 held perhaps 200,000 people, larger than any European city except possibly Constantinople and Paris. It was built on causeways, aqueducts and floating garden plots called chinampas, which were among the most productive agricultural systems ever devised. The Spanish who saw it recorded genuine astonishment.

Aztec human sacrifice was real and it was on a large scale. The excavated skull racks at the Templo Mayor confirm it archaeologically. Two things should be said about it without softening either. The Spanish had every motive to exaggerate the numbers and probably did, and comparable violence was routine in contemporary Europe under different justifications. And it was a state instrument — the wars fought partly to obtain captives kept subject peoples terrorised, which is precisely why so many of them allied with Cortés (Chapter 8.5).

The Andes

A completely different environment and a completely different set of solutions. The Andes rise from a coastal desert — the Atacama, the driest on Earth (Chapter 2.6) — through high valleys to a plateau at 4,000 metres, then down into the Amazon. A society there can access several climate zones within a day's walk, and Andean societies organised themselves precisely to exploit that, with communities holding land at multiple altitudes to spread risk across crops that fail in different conditions.

Freeze-drying. Potatoes left out overnight at altitude freeze, are trodden to expel water during the day, and after several cycles become chuño, which stores for years. This is a food preservation technology that made Andean states possible, because it created a storable surplus in a place with no grain.

A series of states — Caral on the coast, which is remarkably early at around 3000 BCE, then Chavín, Moche, Nazca, Wari and Tiwanaku — culminating in the Inca, who built their empire mostly within the century before the Spanish arrived.

The Inca empire, called Tawantinsuyu, was the largest state in the pre-Columbian Americas — roughly 10 to 12 million people along 4,000 kilometres of mountain.

Its road system ran perhaps 40,000 kilometres, with suspension bridges of woven grass rebuilt annually, and relay runners called chasquis who could carry a message from Quito to Cusco — around 2,000 kilometres — in about a week.

And it ran without money, markets or writing. This is the part that most challenges assumptions. Instead of taxation in goods, there was the mit'a, a labour obligation: households owed work — farming state lands, building roads, serving in the army, weaving cloth — and in return the state maintained enormous storehouses that redistributed food, cloth and tools, including in bad years. Spanish accounts describe storehouses still full years after the conquest.

Records were kept on quipu — assemblages of knotted cords, where the type of knot, its position, the cord's colour and its attachment encode information. Numerical quipus are understood: they use base 10 positional notation. Whether some quipus encoded narrative or language is an open research question, with some promising recent work and no accepted decipherment. It is the Indus problem again, in a different medium.

What this experiment shows

Independently invented in the Americas with no possible contact: agriculture, cities, monumental architecture, states, hierarchy, priesthoods, calendars, astronomy, mathematics with positional notation and zero, writing, long-distance trade, roads, irrigation, metallurgy, and organised warfare.

That is a strong result. Given settled agriculture and enough people, these things appear. They are not a European or Eurasian invention and they are not a historical accident.

Not independently invented: the wheel for transport, iron, the plough, large-scale domesticated animal power, and the crowd diseases.

And the missing items have a common cause. No draught animals means no ploughs, no carts, no cavalry, and no animal reservoir for diseases. The absence of about a dozen wild species from two continents accounts for most of the difference, and it was decided by which large mammals happened to survive the extinctions of Chapter 3.4 on which landmass.

This is the honest core of the argument that Eurasian dominance after 1492 was not about the people. It is also, as Chapter 9.4 will insist, only the starting hand — it explains the state of play in 1492, and it does not explain what happened in 1750 or 1950, and stretching it to do so is where the popular version of this argument goes wrong.

Where this shows up in your life

Your food. Potatoes, tomatoes, maize, chillies, peppers, cacao, vanilla, peanuts, squash, avocado, cassava and beans are all American. Italian food without tomatoes, Indian food without chillies, Irish or Bengali food without potatoes, Swiss chocolate without cacao — none of these were possible before 1492. Chapter 8.5 covers that exchange and its consequences, which include population growth across Eurasia.

The chilli deserves a specific line for Indian readers. It reached India with the Portuguese in the sixteenth century and displaced long pepper and black pepper as the dominant source of heat within a couple of centuries. The defining flavour of most Indian regional cuisines is under five hundred years old.

And potatoes changed Europe demographically. They yield far more calories per hectare than grain on poor soil, they grow underground where armies cannot easily burn them, and their adoption is associated with substantial population growth — and, in Ireland, with a monoculture whose failure in the 1840s killed around a million people and drove a million more to emigrate.

Cities were burned, writing systems were lost, trade stopped, and populations fell by a large fraction. It is the closest thing in ancient history to a case study in systemic collapse, and it is uncomfortably relevant.
