4.6 — The Bronze Age Collapse

A letter was found at Ugarit, a wealthy Levantine port city, baked hard in the fire that destroyed the building it was in. The king of Ugarit writes to the king of Cyprus:

My father, the enemy ships are already here, they have set fire to my towns and have done very great damage in the countryside. Does not my father know that all my troops and chariots are in the Hittite country, and all my ships are in the land of Lycia? The country is abandoned to itself.

The tablet was never sent. It was found in the kiln, still waiting to be fired hard for the journey. Ugarit was destroyed and never reoccupied.

Between roughly 1225 and 1150 BCE, almost every major centre in the eastern Mediterranean was destroyed or abandoned. This chapter is about how a functioning international system disappeared inside two generations, and about why the explanation matters.

What existed before

Chapter 3.12 described the Bronze Age trade network; here is what it had built.

A genuine international system. Egypt under the New Kingdom, the Hittite empire in Anatolia, Assyria and Babylonia in Mesopotamia, the Mycenaean palace states in Greece, Minoan-derived Cyprus, and the wealthy Canaanite port cities of the Levant — all in constant contact.

Shared diplomacy. The Amarna letters show kings addressing each other as "brother", exchanging gifts, arranging royal marriages, and complaining about the quality of gold received. Akkadian was the shared diplomatic language, used by rulers who spoke none of it natively.

Deep economic interdependence. Bronze requires copper and tin from different places (Chapter 3.12). Egypt needed timber and metal. Everyone needed grain in bad years. The Uluburun shipwreck's cargo came from nine or more regions.

And a shared elite culture — palace administration, chariot warfare, luxury goods moving as royal gifts, and literate scribal bureaucracies keeping detailed records.

What happened

Within about seventy-five years:

  • The Hittite empire ceased to exist. Its capital Hattusa was burned and abandoned.
  • Mycenaean Greece collapsed. Every major palace — Mycenae, Pylos, Tiryns, Thebes — was destroyed or abandoned. Writing stopped entirely: the Linear B script disappeared and Greece was illiterate for about four hundred years, until the alphabet arrived from Phoenicia.
  • Ugarit and most Levantine cities were destroyed. Many were not rebuilt.
  • Cyprus's cities were destroyed.
  • Egypt survived, badly damaged, fought off two invasions, lost its empire in the Levant, and never regained its former power.
  • Assyria and Babylonia contracted but survived.

Population fell sharply. Site counts in Greece drop by a large fraction, and the Greek "Dark Age" that followed shows smaller settlements, simpler pottery, no monumental building, and no writing.

This is the most complete collapse of an interconnected civilisation in recorded history, and it is the closest thing we have to a natural experiment in systemic failure.

The candidate explanations, weighed

1. The Sea Peoples. Egyptian inscriptions, principally at Medinet Habu under Ramesses III around 1177 BCE, describe a coalition of foreign peoples arriving by land and sea, destroying the Hittites and Cyprus and the Levantine cities, and being defeated by Egypt in two battles. Names are given — Peleset, Tjekker, Shekelesh, Denyen, Weshesh, Sherden.

Who they were is genuinely unknown. The Peleset are generally identified with the Philistines, who settled the southern Levantine coast and whose material culture shows Aegean features. Others have been argued to come from Sicily, Sardinia, Anatolia and the Aegean.

And the critical point is that they may be a symptom rather than a cause. The inscriptions describe whole peoples moving with families and carts, which is migration under pressure rather than a raiding expedition. Something displaced them first. Attributing the collapse to the Sea Peoples explains one destruction by pointing at another.

2. Drought and famine. This has become much stronger evidence in the last twenty years. Pollen cores from the Sea of Galilee, from Cyprus and from Syria show a sharp drop in tree pollen and a shift to dry-climate vegetation beginning around 1250 BCE and lasting perhaps 150 years. Texts corroborate it independently: Hittite records beg Egypt and Ugarit for grain, one letter describing the shipment as "a matter of life or death"; Egyptian records mention supplying grain to the Hittites.

3. Earthquakes. Several sites show earthquake damage, and the eastern Mediterranean sits on the plate boundaries of Chapter 1.5. An "earthquake storm" — a sequence of large quakes along a fault system over decades, which is a real and observed phenomenon — has been proposed. This is plausible as a contributing shock and cannot explain the failure to rebuild, since these societies had rebuilt after earthquakes before.

4. Systems collapse. This is the framework most specialists now use, and it treats the others as inputs rather than competitors.

The argument: the Bronze Age system was highly interconnected and highly specialised, which made it efficient and fragile. Bronze required long supply chains that crossed several polities. Palace economies concentrated storage, redistribution and record-keeping in a single centre, so destroying the palace destroyed the economy. Elites depended on prestige goods obtained through trade to maintain their legitimacy.

So a shock propagates. Drought reduces harvests. Reduced harvests mean less surplus to trade and less to feed retainers and armies. Trade routes become unsafe, so tin stops arriving, so bronze cannot be made, so armies cannot be equipped. Populations move in search of food, which is a military threat to everyone in their path. Palaces fall and take the records, the redistribution and the specialists with them. Neighbours who might have helped are dealing with the same thing.

The technical description is a tightly coupled system with low redundancy. Each part depends on the others, there are no spare paths, and there is no slack to absorb a shock. Chapter 16.2 uses this as its central model of collapse, and Chapter 12.8 applies the same logic to a modern financial system.

The honest summary: a severe multi-decade drought, probably compounded by earthquakes, hit a system that had no capacity to absorb it, and the resulting migrations, failures and destructions fed on each other. No single cause, and the interconnection is what turned a bad century into a collapse.

What came out of it

The break was not total loss. Several things emerged that the Bronze Age had not managed.

Iron. With tin trade broken, iron — whose ore is local everywhere (Chapter 3.12) — became the practical alternative, and the Iron Age begins in the wreckage. This democratised weaponry and, more importantly, tools.

The alphabet. The Phoenician cities of the Levantine coast survived better than most, and their alphabet (Chapter 3.11) spread with their trade. A writing system learnable in weeks replaced systems learnable in years, and literacy stopped being confined to palace scribes.

Smaller, tougher polities. Instead of a handful of great palace empires, the Iron Age Near East had many mid-sized kingdoms — Israel and Judah, Aram, Phoenician city-states, neo-Hittite states — and Greece rebuilt as independent city-states rather than palace kingdoms. The polis of Chapter 5.1 is a post-collapse form.

And the memory became literature. The Greek Dark Age preserved, orally, stories of a great war against a city in Anatolia. When writing returned, those stories became the Iliad and the Odyssey. Heinrich Schliemann's excavations at Hisarlik from the 1870s found a real, repeatedly destroyed Bronze Age city on the site tradition assigned to Troy — which does not confirm the poem, but does mean the world it remembers existed.

Where this shows up in your life

The efficiency-fragility trade is the general lesson and it is not historical. A supply chain with a single supplier is cheaper than one with three. Just-in-time inventory is cheaper than warehouses. A crop grown as a single high-yielding variety produces more than a mixed field. In every case the efficient arrangement has less slack, and slack is what absorbs shocks.

Modern examples are not hard to find. The 2011 Thailand floods stopped a large share of world hard-disk production because manufacturing had concentrated in one province. A single grounded ship blocking the Suez Canal in 2021 disrupted global shipping for weeks. The 2020–22 semiconductor shortage propagated from a handful of fabrication plants into car factories on four continents. In each case the vulnerability was created by an optimisation that was individually rational.

And the specific warning from 1177 BCE is about correlated failure. The Bronze Age states were not destroyed one at a time by separate enemies. They were hit by the same drought, at the same time, and each one's collapse removed a resource the others depended on. The mechanism that made them prosperous is the mechanism that made the failure total.

Out of the wreckage, over the following five centuries, came the first empires to rule genuinely enormous territories — first the Assyrians, who invented much of the machinery of imperial terror, then Babylon, and then a Persian empire that governed perhaps 40 percent of the world's population and did it with a strikingly different philosophy.
